AREMANE co-organise un grand colloque scientifique international en Uruguay

In spite of tremendous efforts made in the last decades, the causes of ALS remain obscure to biomedical sciences. Recent evidence indicates that ALS is a non-cell autonomous disease with the involvement of other cell types than motor neurons. Moreover, non-neural cells might also play a role in ALS. It is high time to learn about ALS as a system disease, beyond the simple affection of motor neurons.
The Symposium is focused on the understanding of ALS pathogenesis. Such a broader and interdisciplinary focus has been chosen considering the major advances in this field during the last few years and the need of integration. The subject is timely because new emerging therapeutical approaches could be proposed as a result of the bridges that can be established between basic and clinical research. The meeting is intended to create a dialog among reseachers from Europe and North America with ALS groups working in Latin America, to facilitate productive interactions and develop collaborative research projects.
- A major goal of this symposium is to discuss the biological basis of ALS, viewed as a complex system disease.
- The meeting is designed to promote cooperative interactions between clinical and basic scientists doing cutting edge research in ALS and related neuromuscular diseases.
- A further goal is to bring together experts from different but related fields to exchange their advances.
- This symposium is proposed as the satellite activity of the Latin American School of Neuroscience (IBRO), which will allow to disseminate this knowledge among advanced students attending the meeting. The proceeding of the symposium will be further disseminated through printed publication of the lectures and poster abstracts.
The meeting will be held in the Hotel Casapueblo, one famous site built on the top of the Punta Ballena. The building is art itself, enabling visitors to enjoy the sea view and the magnificent sunsets. Called by the artist "the best corner of the world", the hotel has rooms with terraces overlooking the sea and, at the same time, all the modern facilities necessary to support a small conference according to international standards. CasaPueblo is close to Punta del Este’s commercial area and only 50 minutes driving from Montevideo International Airport.
Neuroscience has developed as one of the higher impact areas in many countries of South America. It has thus been possible to generate a “critical mass” of investigators in neurosciences, an essential condition to be able to host a meeting such as the one being proposed. There is a need for South American neuroscientists to build a solid bridge between basic neurosciences and clinical neurology. Furthermore, they have strengthened frontier research and Ph.D./M.D. training programs to benefit both medical teaching and higher education in biological sciences.
